The geomagnetic field was quiet to unsettled on October 18. Solar wind speed ranged between 326 and 381 km/s. A fairly low speed stream from CH425 began to influence the field late in the day.
Solar flux measured at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 90.6 (up 6.0 over the last solar rotation). The planetary A index was 5 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 5.1). Three hour interval K indices: 20011123 (planetary), 21121113 (Boulder).
The background x-ray flux is at the class B1 level.
At midnight UTC the visible solar disk had 7 spotted regions.
Region 11112 decayed and lost both penumbral area and spots. Flares:
C1.2 at 11:40, C2.5 long duration event peaking at 16:43, C1.2 at 21:39 UTC.
Region 11113 added several spots and was quiet.
Region 11115 was quiet and stable.
Spotted regions not numbered by NOAA/SWPC:
[S824] This region emerged early in the day in the northeast quadrant. Location at midnight: N17E56
[S825] This region rotated into view at the northeast limb before noon. Location at midnight: N15E74
[S826] Another region rotated into view at the northeast limb late in the day. Location at midnight: N23E82
[S827] A new region emerged late on October 18 in the northwest quadrant (west of region 11113). Location at midnight: N18W03
October 16-18: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were seen in LASCO or STEREO images.
Coronal hole history (since late October 2002)

A recurrent coronal hole (CH425) in the northern hemisphere was in an Earth facing position on October 15-18. CH425 has decayed significantly over the last solar rotation (and split into two smaller parts CH425A and CH425B due to an active region emerging). Another recurrent coronal hole (CH426) has grown significantly over the last solar rotation and will be Earth facing October 20-22.

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over high and upper middle latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor to fair.
The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to active on October 19 and quiet to unsettled on October 20-22 due to coronal hole effects. Quiet to active conditions, maybe with minor storm intervals, is possible on October 23-25 due to effects from CH426.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth
within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the
color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.
Green: 0-20% probability, Yellow: 20-60% probability, Red: 60-100% probability.
