Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was quiet on October 19. Solar wind speed ranged between 346 and 455 km/s under the influence of a relatively low speed stream from CH425.

Solar flux measured at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 86.6 (up 1.8 over the last solar rotation). The planetary A index  was 5 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 5.3). Three hour interval K indices: 22211002 (planetary), 23222111 (Boulder).

The background x-ray flux is at the class B1 level.

At midnight UTC the visible solar disk had 5 spotted regions.

Region 11112 decayed further and is about to rotate over the southwest limb. Flares: C1.3 at 06:51 and long duration C1.1 at 10:14 UTC.
Region 11113 lost most of the spots it gained the previous day.
Region 11115 was quiet and stable.
New region 11117 rotated into view at the northeast limb late on October 18 and was numbered by NOAA/SWPC the following day.
New region 11118 emerged near the northeast limb on October 18 and was numbered the next day by NOAA/SWPC.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

October 17-19: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were seen in LASCO or STEREO images.

A recurrent coronal hole (CH425) in the northern hemisphere was in an Earth facing position on October 15-18. CH425 has decayed significantly over the last solar rotation (and split into two smaller parts CH425A and CH425B due to an active region emerging). Another recurrent coronal hole (CH426) has grown significantly over the last solar rotation and will be Earth facing October 20-22.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over high and upper middle latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor to fair.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to unsettled on October 20-22 due to coronal hole effects. Quiet to active conditions are possible on October 23-25 due to effects from CH426.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-20% probability, Yellow: 20-60% probability, Red: 60-100% probability.
