The geomagnetic field was quiet on August 17. Solar wind speed ranged between 380 and 447 km/s (average speed was 421 km/s, decreasing 27 km/s from the previous day).
Solar flux measured at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 67.6. The planetary A index was 5 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 4.6). Three hour interval K indices: 21001122 (planetary), 21111112 (Boulder).
The background x-ray flux is below the class A1 level.
At midnight the visible solar disk was spotless. The solar flare activity level was very low. No C class events were recorded during the day.
August 15-17: No obvious fully or partly Earth directed CMEs were observed.

A trans equatorial coronal hole (CH285) was in an Earth facing position on August 14-15. A small recurrent coronal hole (CH286) was Earth facing on August 17.
Processed STEREO 195 image at 21:55 UTC on August 17. The darkest areas on the solar disk are likely coronal holes.
Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along east-west paths over high and upper middle latitudes is fair to good. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.
Monitoring remarks from a location near N58E06: August 18: Fair to strong signals were noted from a number of North American stations, in particular stations located in or near New York and Boston were enjoying good propagation. 1420 WBSM New Bedford MA was one of the rarer signals while 1490 kHz was dominated by WBAE Portland ME.
The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to unsettled on August 18-19 due to possible effects from CH285 and quiet on August 20.

Green: 0-20% probability, Yellow: 20-60% probability, Red: 60-100% probability.
