Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was quiet to unsettled on October 15. Solar wind speed ranged between 285 and 326 km/s. What was likely the passage of the CME observed on October 11 was observed at ACE near 03h UTC. The associated disturbance was weak.

Solar flux measured at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 82.2 (up 0.1 over the last solar rotation). The planetary A index  was 5 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 5). Three hour interval K indices: 01011131 (planetary), 11121211 (Boulder).

The background x-ray flux is at the class A8 level.

At midnight UTC the visible solar disk had 3 spotted regions.

Region 11112 developed slowly and could produce C flares.
Region 11113 was mostly quiet and stable.
New region 11115 rotated into view at the southeast limb on October 14 and was numbered the next day by NOAA/SWPC.

Minor update added at 12:15 UTC on October 16: Region 11112 has been developing quickly today with the spot count at 32 at 09h UTC, nearly doubling since midnight. The region has mixed polarities and even if the possibility is low yet, there's a chance of a minor M class flare. A flare of that magnitude could trigger an eruption of the large. very long filament to the east southeast of the region.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

October 13-15: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were seen in LASCO or STEREO images.

A recurrent coronal hole (CH425) in the northern hemisphere will rotate into an Earth facing position on October 15-17. CH425 has decayed significantly over the last solar rotation and it is uncertain if the coronal hole will produce any geomagnetic disturbance this time.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over high and upper middle latitudes is poor to fair. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet on October 16-17. Weak effects from CH425 are possible on October 18-21.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-20% probability, Yellow: 20-60% probability, Red: 60-100% probability.
