Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was quiet on July 27. Solar wind speed ranged between 335 and 448 km/s.

Solar flux measured at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 99.2 (increasing 10.0 over the last solar rotation). The planetary A index was 4 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 3.5). Three hour interval K indices: 12001102 (planetary), 12111211 (Boulder).

The background x-ray flux is at the class B4 level.

At midnight UTC the visible solar disk had 10 spotted regions.

Region 11260 developed further and is a complex region capable of producing M class flares, maybe even a major flare. There's a stacked double delta configuration in the main penumbra. Flares: C3.0 at 02:01, C3.0 at 06:39, C3.0 at 10:02, C3.6 at 11:31, C2.0 at 12:53, C2.0 at 13:13, M1.1/1N at 16:07, C2.3 at 21:21, C2.5 at 21:54 UTC.
Region 11261 is a compact region capable of producing M class flares.
New region 11262 emerged in the northeast quadrant on July 24 and was numbered by SWPC 3 days later. The region has mixed polarities.

Spotted regions not numbered by NOAA/SWPC:
[S1127] reemerged on July 27. Location at midnight: N05W21
[S1131] reemerged on July 26. Location at midnight: S17W20
[S1138] emerged near the southeast limb on July 27. Location at midnight: S33E65
[S1141] emerged in the northeast quadrant on July 27. Location at midnight: N16E00
[S1142] emerged in the southeast quadrant on July 27. Location at midnight: S17E58
[S1143] rotated partly into view at the northeast limb on July 27. The region could produce M flares. Location at midnight: N17E83
[S1144] emerged in the southwest quadrant on July 27. Location at midnight: S18W57

A filament eruption near 06h UTC to the west and north of region 11260 was associated with a CME off of the northeast limb. A filament eruption in the northern hemisphere near the central meridian starting near 16:50 UTC was not associated with any obvious CME.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

July 25-27: No obviously earth directed CMEs were observed.

Coronal holes

A well defined recurrent coronal hole (CH468) in the northern hemisphere was in an Earth facing position on July 26-27. CH468 may be too far to the north to cause a geomagnetic disturbance. A poorly defined trans equatorial coronal hole was Earth facing on July 26-27.

The above coronal hole map is based on a new method where coronal holes are detected automatically. The method may need some fine tuning, however, it has significant advantages over detecting coronal holes manually. The main improvement is the ability to detect coronal holes at and just beyond the solar limbs. Early results using this method for SDO images over a span of several weeks indicate a good match between coronal holes observed over the visible disk and their extent and position at the east and west limbs. Note that the polar coronal holes are easily detected using the new method, the extent and intensity of both holes are consistent with other data sources.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over high and upper middle latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to unsettled on July 28-30 due to coronal hole effects.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-20% probability, Yellow: 20-60% probability, Red: 60-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue (blue-green) is positive.

Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers.
