Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was quiet to active on July 25. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 283 and 450 km/s, increasingly under the influence of a high speed stream from CH576 after 13h UTC.

Solar flux measured at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 106.9 (increasing 5.9 over the last solar rotation). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 12 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 11.9). Three hour interval K indices: 11111344 (planetary), 12112344 (Boulder).

The background x-ray flux was at the class B3 level.

At midnight UTC the visible solar disk had 13 spotted active regions (in 2K resolution SDO images).

Region 11793 [N21W68] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 11799 [S18W33] was quiet and stable.
Region 11800 [S07W31] gained penumbral area and is likely to continue producing low level C class flares.
Region 11801 [N20E45] was quiet and stable.
Region 11802 [N13W74] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 11803 [S10W15] gained a few penumbra spots and was quiet.
Region 11804 [S19W85] developed further as it rotated to the southwest limb.
New region 11805 [S06W02] emerged on July 24 and developed slowly on July 25 when it was numbered by SWPC.

Spotted regions not numbered by SWPC:
S2566 [S16W03] was quiet and stable.
S2567 [N22W03] lost the trailer spot and had penumbra leader spots reemerge.
New region S2569 [N23W53] emerged with several penumbra spots.
New region S2570 [S14E43] emerged with penumbra spots.
New region S2571 [N42W32] emerged with a penumbra spot at a high latitude.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

July 23-25: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed in LASCO and STEREO imagery.

Coronal holes

Coronal hole history (since October 2002)
Compare today's report to the situation one solar rotation ago: 28 days ago 27 days ago 26 days ago

A recurrent trans equatorial coronal hole (CH576) was in an Earth facing position on July 22-23.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over high and upper middle latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is good.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to active on July 26 due to effects from CH576 and quiet on July 27-28.

Coronal holes (1) Coronal mass ejection (2) M and X class flares (3)

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-20% probability, Yellow: 20-60% probability, Red: 60-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers.
