Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was quiet to active on May 11. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 334 and 452 km/s under the influence of a low to moderately high speed stream from CH616.

Solar flux at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 164.4 (increasing 14.1 over the last solar rotation). The 90 day 10.7 flux at 1 AU was 149.3. The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 10 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 10.3). Three hour interval K indices: 43131122 (planetary), 34232312 (Boulder).

The background x-ray flux is at the class B8 level.

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 17 active regions in 2K resolution (SN: 387) and 15 active regions in 1K resolution (SN: 261) SDO images on the visible solar disk.

Region 12053 [N09W56] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 12055 [N11W10] disecayed slowly and was mostly quiet.
Region 12056 [N05E05] had new flux emerging in the trailing spot section. A weak magnetic delta structure has formed and there is a fair chance for an M class flare.
Region 12057 [N15E14] was quiet and stable.
Region 12058 [S12E28] decayed significantly and was quiet.
Region 12059 [S01E07] developed slowly and has moved into the southern hemisphere.
New region 12060 [S16E37] was finally split off from AR 12058 by SWPC. The region is developing quickly and has lots of polarity intermixing and a magnetic delta. A major flare is possible.
New region 12061 [S24E69] rotated into view on May 10 and was numbered by SWPC the next day.
New region 12062 [S07W29] emerged on May 10 and developed significantly on May 11 when it was numbered by SWPC.

Spotted regions not numbered (or interpreted differently) by SWPC:
S3386 [S19W70] developed slowly and quietly.
S3394 [S18W38] was quiet and stable.
S3404 [N13W22] was quiet and stable.
S3405 [N09E08] decayed slowly and quietly.
S3411 [S13E04] was quiet and stable.
S3415 [N02E18] was quiet and stable.
New region S3417 [S23E45] emerged with penumbra spots.
New region S3418 [N22E74] rotated into view with a penumbra spot.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

May 9-11: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed in LASCO and STEREO imagery.

Coronal holes

Coronal hole history (since October 2002)
Compare today's report to the situation one solar rotation ago: 28 days ago 27 days ago 26 days ago

A southern hemisphere coronal hole (CH617) could rotate into an Earth facing position on May 12-13.

Coronal hole map

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor to fair.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet on May 12-14 and quiet to active on May 15-16 due to effects from CH617.

Coronal holes (1) Coronal mass ejection (2) M and X class flares (3)

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers.
