Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was unsettled to minor storm on September 19. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 332 and 498 km/s. The disturbance that began during the evening of September 18 was likely associated with a co-rotating interaction region caused by a large southern hemisphere coronal hole. An extension of that coronal hole rotated across the central meridian on September 15 and was the most likely source of the disturbance on September 19.

Solar flux at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 122 (decreasing 10.0 over the last solar rotation). The 90 day 10.7 flux at 1 AU was 134.4. The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 22 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 21.5). Three hour interval K indices: 45333443 (planetary), 45424432 (Boulder).

The background x-ray flux is at the class B4 level.

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 10 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 149) and 7 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 92) SDO images on the visible solar disk.

Region 12164 [S14W76] decayed quickly leaving only penumbra spots by the end of the day.
Region 12166 [N13W22] decayed slowly and was mostly quiet.
Region 12167 [N07W06] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 12168 [S21E20] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 12169 [N04E39] decayed slowly and was quiet.
Region 12170 [N10E40] was quiet and stable.
New region 12171 [S10E67] rotated into view on September 18 and was numbered by SWPC the next day. Further C flares are possible.

Spotted regions not numbered (or interpreted differently) by SWPC:
S3824 [S10W55] reemerged with a penumbra spot.
New region S3832 [S15E78] rotated into view.
New region S3833 [N07W32] emerged with penumbra spots.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

September 17-19: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed in LASCO and STEREO imagery.

Coronal holes

A northern hemisphere coronal hole (CH635) could rotate into an Earth facing position on September 21. A recurrent southern hemisphere coronal hole will likely rotate into an Earth facing positon on September 23.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is fair.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to unsettled on September 20-22.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers.
