The geomagnetic field was quiet to active on August 29 under the influence of a moderately high speed stream from CH685. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 403 and 454 km/s.
Solar flux at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 100.1 (decreasing 1.4 over the last solar rotation). The 90 day 10.7 flux at 1 AU was 115.3. The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 12 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 11.8). Three hour interval K indices: 43232322 (planetary), 42242422 (Boulder).
The background x-ray flux is at the class B4 level.
At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 10 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 139) and 8 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 100) SDO images on the visible solar disk.
Region 12403 [S14W78] decayed slowly and rotated
partially out of view. A long duration M1.4 event peaking at 03:30 UT was
observed early on August 30.
Region 12405 [S21E22] decayed slowly and quietly.
New region 12406 [N03E36] emerged on August 28 and was numbered by SWPC
the next day as the region decayed slowly.
Spotted regions not numbered (or interpreted differently) by SWPC:
S4703 [N17W12] decayed slowly and lost the leading polarity spots.
S4715 [N11E03] was quiet and stable.
S4719 [S11W50] reemerged with a few spots.
S4720 [S18E25] decayed slowly and quietly.
S4721 [S17E07] was quiet and stable.
New region S4722 [N12W50] emerged early in the day as a bipolar region,
then decayed leaving only a penumbra spot by the end of the day.
New region S4723 [N03W27] was observed with a penumbra spot.

August 27-29: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed.
[Coronal hole
history (since October 2002)]
[Compare today's report to the situation one solar rotation ago:
A recurrent trans equatorial coronal hole (CH685) was in an Earth facing position on August 25-26. Another recurrent trans equatorial coronal hole (CH686) rotate across the central meridian on August 29-30.
Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is fair.
The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to unsettled on August 30-31 due to effects from CH685. Quiet conditions are likely on September 1 while a disturbance associated with CH686 could cause quiet to active conditions on September 2-3.
Coronal holes (1) | Coronal mass ejection (2) | M and X class flares (3) |
1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the
next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48
hours.
Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.
Data for all numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers.
