Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was quiet to active on October 24. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 395 and 568 km/s. A fairly weak solar wind shock was observed at SOHO at 18:39 UT, the arrival of the October 22 CME. The Bz component of the interplanetary magnetic field has been mostly northwards since the CME arrival and the total field is early on October 25 close to normal levels.

Solar flux at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 106.3 (decreasing 21.2 over the last solar rotation). The 90 day 10.7 flux at 1 AU was 104.2. The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 9 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 9.1). Three hour interval K indices: 23210143 (planetary), 23312233 (Boulder).

The background x-ray flux is at the class B3 level.

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 8 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 166) and 6 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 96) SDO images on the visible solar disk.

Region 12434 [S10W74] decayed quickly and produced a few low level C flares.
Region 12435 [S14W33] was quiet and stable.
Region 12436 [N09W23] was quiet and stable. The region has minor polarity intermixing.
Region 12437 [S19W10] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 12439 [N17E51] was quiet and stable.

Spotted regions not numbered (or interpreted differently) by SWPC:
S4835 [N22W28] reemerged with tiny spots.
S4844 [S10W49] decayed slowly and quietly.
New region S4845 [S02W24] emerged with a tiny spot.

C2+ flares:

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

October 23-24: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed in available LASCO imagery.
October 22: A partial halo CME was observed after the C4 LDE in AR 12434. The CME reached Earth on October 24.

Coronal holes

[Coronal hole history (since October 2002)]
[Compare today's report to the situation one solar rotation ago: 28 days ago 27 days ago 26 days ago]

No obvious coronal holes are currently near or approaching Earth facing positions.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor to fair.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to unsettled on October 25 due to CME effects with a chance of isolated active intervals. Quiet conditions are likely on October 26-27.

Coronal holes (1) Coronal mass ejection (2) M and X class flares (3)

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers.
