Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was quiet to minor storm on August 24 under the influence of a high speed stream from CH756. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 458 and 598 km/s.

Solar flux at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 78.0 (increasing 7.7 over the last solar rotation). The 90 day 10.7 flux at 1 AU was 86.7. The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 16 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 15.9). Three hour interval K indices: 53233223 (planetary), 54233323 (Boulder).

The background x-ray flux is at the class A8 level.

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 5 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 84) and 5 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 68) SDO images on the visible solar disk.

Region 12578 [N09W60] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 12579 [N12W08] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 12580 [S17E36] was quiet and stable.

Spotted regions not numbered (or interpreted differently) by SWPC:
New region S5412 [N12W26] emerged with a tiny spot.
New region S5413 [N13E49] emerged with several spots.

C2+ flares:

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

August 22-24: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed in available LASCO imagery.

Coronal holes

[Coronal hole history (since October 2002)]
[Compare today's report to the situation one solar rotation ago: 28 days ago 27 days ago 26 days ago]

A southern hemisphere coronal hole (CH756) was in an Earth facing position on August 20-21. A recurrent trans equatorial coronal hole (CH757) will rotate into an Earth facing position on August 26-27.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is fair.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to active on August 25 due to effects from CH756 and quiet on August 26-28. Effects from CH757 could cause quiet to minor storm conditions on August 29-30.

Coronal holes (1) Coronal mass ejection (2) M and X class flares (3)

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers.
