Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was very quiet on August 28. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 341 and 370 km/s.

Solar flux at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 85.4 (increasing 13.5 over the last solar rotation). The 90 day 10.7 flux at 1 AU was 86.5. The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 2 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 2.1). Three hour interval K indices: 00011010 (planetary), 01112221 (Boulder).

The background x-ray flux is at the class B2 level.

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 4 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 90) and 4 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 74) SDO images on the visible solar disk.

Region 12580 [S17W16] developed slowly and quietly.
Region 12581 [N12W07] was quiet and stable.
Region 12582 [N08W50] developed slowly and quietly.
New region 12583 [N13W50] was first observed with spots on August 25 and was numbered 3 days later by SWPC when the region developed further. The region produced the single C1 flare of the day.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

August 26-28: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed in available LASCO imagery.

Coronal holes

[Coronal hole history (since October 2002)]
[Compare today's report to the situation one solar rotation ago: 28 days ago 27 days ago 26 days ago]

A recurrent trans equatorial coronal hole (CH757) was in an Earth facing position on August 26-27. A recurrent northern hemisphere coronal hole (CH758) could rotate into an Earth facing position on August 29-31. A trans equatorial coronal hole (CH759) could become Earth facing on August 31-September 1.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle latitudes is poor to fair. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to minor storm on August 29-30 due to effects from CH757 and quiet to unsettled on August 31. On September 1-5 quiet to active conditions are likely due to effects from CH758 and CH759.

Coronal holes (1) Coronal mass ejection (2) M and X class flares (3)

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers.
