The geomagnetic field was quiet on March 20. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 353 and 432 km/sec.
Solar flux at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 76.8 (increasing 6.0 over the previous solar rotation). The average 90 day 10.7 flux at 1 AU was 69.0. The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 4 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 4.5). Three hour interval K indices: 12111111 (planetary), 02212211 (Boulder)
The background x-ray flux is at the class A4 level.
At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 2 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 61) and in 2 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 39) SDO/HMI images.
Region 12735 [N02W11]
decayed slowly and quietly.
New region 12736 [N08W35] was first observed with spots on March 16.
The initial spots disappeared by the next day. New flux emerged quickly
during the latter half of March 19 and on March 20 with polarity
intermixing. The region produced a long duration C4 event before noon on
March 20 with
an associated rather faint asymmetrical full halo CME. An impulsive C5.6
flare was recorded at 03:12 UT on March 21 and the region could produce a
minor M class event.
Update added at 17:35 UT: AR 12736 continues to develop and currently has a magnetic delta in the trailing spot section. Flare activity has increased and the potential for an M class event has become significantly higher.
C2+ flares:
Magnitude | Peak time (UT) | Location | AR | Recorded by | Comment |
C4.8/1N | 11:12 | N09W26 | 12736 | GOES15 | full halo CME |
March 18-19: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed in available LASCO imagery.
March 20: A rather faint asymmetrical full halo CME (associated with
a C4 LDE in AR 12736) was observed after noon in LASCO imagery. The CME
could reach Earth on March 23.

No obvious coronal holes are currently in or near Earth facing positions.
Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle latitudes is poor to fair. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.
The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet on March 21-22. The March 20 CME will likely reach Earth on March 23 and could cause unsettled to minor storm conditions.
Coronal holes (1) | Coronal mass ejection (2) | M and X class flares (3) |
1) Effects from a coronal hole
could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed
stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.
Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.
Data for all numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers.
