Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was quiet to unsettled on January 20. The high latitude magnetometer at Andenes recorded quiet to minor storm levels.

Solar flux density measured at 20h UT on 2.8 GHz was 99.3 - decreasing 31.3 over the previous solar rotation. (Centered 1 year average SF at 1 AU - 183 days ago: 83.13). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 4 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 4.1). Three hour interval K indices: 30000001 (planetary), 41000111 (Boulder), 50000002 (Andenes).

The background x-ray flux is at the class B1 level (GOES 16).

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 9 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 114) and in 5 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 60) SDO/HMI images.

Region 12927 [S20W77] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 12929 [N08W85] rotated partly out of view and produced a major flare which was the source of a minor proton event. C1 flares: C1.1 @ 02:14, C1.6 @ at 02:46 UT.
Region 12930 [N21W84] rotated partly out of view and was quiet.
Region 12932 [N30W02] was quiet and stable.
Region 12933 [S19W48] decayed slowly and quietly.
New region 12934 [S24E68] rotated into view on January 19 and was numbered the next day by SWPC.

Spotted regions not observed (or interpreted differently) by SWPC:
S7304 [S20W09] was quiet and stable.
S7305
[N20E23] was quiet and stable.
New region S7308 [S19E77] rotated into view with a tiny spot.

C2+ flares:

Magnitude Peak time (UT) Location Source Recorded by Comment
M5.5/1F 06:01 N08W68 12929 GOES16 CME, type II/IV radio sweeps, proton event

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

January 18: A CME was observed off the northwest limb and part of the southwest limb after an M1.5 event in AR 12929 peaking at 17:44 UT. Due to missing LASCO imagery for a couple of hours after this event, it is uncertain whether or not there were any Earth direct components. There is a chance of weak geomagnetic effects from the CME on January 22.
January 19-20
: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed in available LASCO imagery.

Coronal holes

[Coronal hole history (since October 2002)]
[Compare today's report to the situation one solar rotation ago: 28 days ago 27 days ago 26 days ago]

A small, recurrent northern hemisphere coronal hole (CH1055) was in an Earth facing position on January 20. Another northern hemisphere coronal hole (CH1056) will rotate across the central meridian on January 21-22.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle and high latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to unsettled on January 21-22 and become quiet to active on January 23-25 due to effects from CH1055 and CH1056.

Coronal holes (1) Coronal mass ejection (2) M and X class flares (3)

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all officially numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC, all other regions are numbered sequentially as they emerge using the STAR spot number. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers. SWPC data considered to be not sufficiently precise (location, area, classification) are colored red.
