Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was quiet to active on December 16. Solar wind speed ranged between 369 and 581 km/sec under the influence of a high speed stream from coronal hole CH133.

Solar flux measured at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 90.0. The planetary A index was 10 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 10.3).

The background x-ray flux is at the class B1 level.

At midnight there was 1 spotted region on the visible solar disk. The solar flare activity level was very low. No C class events were recorded during the day.

Region 10710 developed slowly adding penumbral area and spots

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

December 14-16: No obviously Earth directed CMEs observed. A full halo CME was observed in LASCO C3 images after 19h UTC on December 15. Its source was likely a few days behind the northwest limb.

An extension (CH133) of the northern polar coronal hole was in a geoeffective position on December 13. A recurrent coronal hole (CH134) in the southern hemisphere will likely rotate into a geoeffective position on December 18.

Processed SOHO/EIT 284 image at 18:03 UTC on December 11. The darkest areas on the solar disk are likely coronal holes.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be unsettled to minor storm on December 17 and quiet to active on December 18 under the influence of a coronal hole flow and quiet on December 19-20.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Material from a CME is likely to impact Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-20% probability, Yellow: 20-60% probability, Red: 60-100% probability.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along east-west paths over high and upper middle latitudes is poor. Propagation along long distance north-south paths is poor. Trans Atlantic propagation conditions are normally monitored every night on 1470 kHz. Dominant station tonight: Radio Vibración (Venezuela). On other frequencies quite a few stations from North America were observed before 02h UTC, then slowly stations further south became stronger. On 1070 kHz Radio Santa Fč (Colombia) replaced the usually dominant CBA Moncton.
