The geomagnetic field was quiet on January 21. Solar wind speed ranged between 351 and 445 (all day average 416) km/sec.
Solar flux measured at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 93.8. The planetary A

The background x-ray flux is at the class B1 level.
At midnight there were 2 spotted regions on the visible solar disk. The solar flare activity level was very low. No C class events were recorded during the day.
Region 10848 developed further with a number of new intermediate spots emerging. C flares are likely and a minor M class flare is a possibility. Polarities are intermixed in the central area.

[S618] This region emerged on January 21 in the southeast quadrant. Location at midnight: S07E57.
January 19-21: No obviously fully or partly Earth directed CMEs were observed. No images were available for January 21 when I wrote this.
Coronal hole history (since late October 2002)

A recurrent trans equatorial coronal hole (CH206) will likely rotate to an Earth facing position late on January 21-22. CH206 appears to have decayed quite a bit in the southern part over the last solar rotation.

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to unsettled on January 22 and become unsettled to active on January 23-24 due to effects from CH206. Quiet to unsettled is likely on January 25-26.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth
within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.
Green: 0-20% probability, Yellow: 20-60% probability, Red: 60-100% probability.
Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along east-west paths over high and upper middle latitudes is fair. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is very poor. Trans Atlantic propagation conditions are normally monitored every night on 1470 kHz. Dominant stations tonight: WLAM Lewiston ME and Radio Vibración (Venezuela). While there were still a lot of stations from the USA and Canada around, signals were considerably weaker compared to the previous day. During the morning of January 21 propagation became excellent and North American signals were still present after 11h UTC.
