The geomagnetic field was very quiet on December 30. Solar wind speed ranged between 340 and 362 km/s.
Solar flux measured at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 75.0. The planetary A index was 2 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 2.4). Three hour interval K indices: 11000100 (planetary), 12011100 (Boulder).
The background x-ray flux is below the class A1 level.
At midnight the visible solar disk was spotless. The solar flare activity level was low. A single C class event was recorded during the day. This was a C1.2 flare and had its origin in a returning active region. This region is currently just behind the southeast limb and is capable of M class flaring. A long duration C8.3 event (associated with type II and IV radio sweeps) occurred in the same region at 01:11 UTC on December 31. The region could be capable of producing a small proton flare.
December 28-30: No obvious fully or partially Earth directed CMEs were observed in LASCO imagery.

No obvious coronal holes are currently in or near Earth facing positions.
Processed SOHO/EIT 195 image at 00:00 UTC on December 31. The darkest areas on the solar disk are likely coronal holes.
Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over high and upper middle latitudes is good. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.
Monitoring remarks from a location near N58E06: December 8: Excellent signals were noted on nearly all TA frequencies during my local morning. Stations like 1290 CJBK and 1330 WLOL had huge signals. The Vancouver stations on 1320 and 1470 were occasionally very good. The best Trans Atlantic propagation sector was 290-320 degrees.
The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet on December 31 - January 6.
