The geomagnetic field was active to major storm on June 17. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 391 and 562 km/s under the influence of CME effects.
Solar flux measured at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 124.0 (decreasing 1.1 over the last solar rotation). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 49 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 49.0). Three hour interval K indices: 44566544 (planetary), 43465544 (Boulder).
The background x-ray flux is at the class B4 level.
At midnight UTC the visible solar disk had 7 spotted active regions (in 2K resolution SDO images).
Region 11504 [S17W39] still has a magnetic delta structure in the southwestern part of the
southeasternmost penumbra. Interestingly the separation between the two large
southern penumbrae is decreasing. M flares are possible.
Region 11505 [S11W41] decayed losing all penumbra.
Region 11506 [N09W34] was quiet and stable.
Region 11507 [S27W63] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 11509 [S16W57] decayed slowly and was quiet.
Spotted active regions not numbered or interpreted differently by NOAA/SWPC:
S1732 [S15E32] was quiet and stable.
New region S1737 [S15W27] emerged with a single spot to the east of AR 11504.
The most interesting event of the day was a small filament eruption 07-11h UTC across the central meridian in the southern hemisphere. LASCO and STEREO imagery indicate that the CME is likely not Earth directed.
June 15-17: No obvious CMEs were observed in LASCO and STEREO imagery.
Coronal hole history (since October

No obvious coronal holes are currently in or near potentially geoeffective positions.
The above coronal hole map is based on a method where coronal holes are detected automatically. While the method may need some fine tuning, it has significant advantages over detecting coronal holes manually. The main improvement is the ability to detect coronal holes at and just beyond the solar limbs. Early results using this method for SDO images over a span of several weeks indicate a good match between coronal holes observed over the visible disk and their extent and position at the east and west limbs. Note that the polar coronal holes are easily detected using this method, the extent and intensity of both CHs are consistent with other data sources.
Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over high and upper middle latitudes is very poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is fair to good.
The geomagnetic field is expected to be unsettled to minor storm on June 18 due to CME effects. Quiet to unsettled is likely on June 19 becoming quiet on June 20-21.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue (blue-green) is positive.
