The geomagnetic field was quiet to unsettled on May 18. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 362 and 479 km/s.
Solar flux measured at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 132.2 (decreasing 16.9 over the last solar rotation). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 9 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 9.3). Three hour interval K indices: 32221223 (planetary), 32121323 (Boulder).
The background x-ray flux is at the class B3 level.
At midnight UTC the visible solar disk had 12 spotted active regions (in 2K resolution SDO images).
Region 11477 [S22W58] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 11478 [S23W48] was quiet and stable.
Region 11479 [N14W26] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 11482 [N17W17] developed significantly becoming a compact region with minor polarity intermixing. M class flares are possible.
Region 11483 [S24W16] developed slowly and quietly.
Region 11484 [N11E12] developed slowly and could produce C and minor M class flares. There's a weak magnetic delta structure in the central part of the region.
Region 11485 [S18E26] developed slowly and quietly.
New region 11486 [N15E68] rotated into view at the northeast limb on May 17 and was numbered the next day by SWPC.
Spotted active regions not numbered by NOAA/SWPC:
S1655 [S18W13] was quiet and stable.
S1659 [N10E43] was quiet and stable.
New region S1665 [N21E20] emerged with a single spot.
New region S1666 [S19E35] emerged with a few spots.
May 16: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed in LASCO or STEREO
May 17: A partial halo CME was observed after an M5 LDE in AR 11476 early in the day.
May 18: A B7.7 event in AR 11482 at 04:51 UTC triggered a small filament eruption to the south of the region. No obvious CME was observed in LASCO imagery and only a very small CME was observed in STEREO-A images.
Coronal hole history (since October

A recurrent trans equatorial coronal hole (CH517) will be in an Earth facing position on May 19.
The above coronal hole map is based on a method where coronal holes are detected automatically. While the method may need some fine tuning, it has significant advantages over detecting coronal holes manually. The main improvement is the ability to detect coronal holes at and just beyond the solar limbs. Early results using this method for SDO images over a span of several weeks indicate a good match between coronal holes observed over the visible disk and their extent and position at the east and west limbs. Note that the polar coronal holes are easily detected using this method, the extent and intensity of both CHs are consistent with other data sources.
Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over high and upper middle latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.
The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to unsettled on May 19-20. If the CME observed on May 17 reaches Earth on May 19 unsettled to active conditions are possible. quiet conditions are likely on May 21. A high speed stream from CH517 could arrive on May 22 and cause quiet to active conditions until May 23.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue (blue-green) is positive.
