[Presentations:

4th SSN Workshop, Locarno, 2014]
The geomagnetic field was very quiet on August 9. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 308 and 359 km/s.
Solar flux at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 113 (decreasing 13.8 over the last solar rotation). The 90 day 10.7 flux at 1 AU was 133.3. The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 3 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 2.8). Three hour interval K indices: 01110010 (planetary), 12301221 (Boulder).
The background x-ray flux is at the class B4 level.
At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 8 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 160) and 5 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 84) SDO images on the visible solar disk.
Region 12130 [S09W82] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 12132 [S19W61] decayed quickly and quietly.
Region 12134 [N09W24] decayed further and was quiet.
Region 12135 [N12E23] matured and began to decay.
New region 12137 [S18W08] was first observed with spots on August 5 with
SWPC numbering the region 4 days later when new leading polarity flux emerged.
Spotted regions not numbered (or interpreted differently) by SWPC:
S3718 [S26E03] was quiet and stable.
S3720 [N12W06] was quiet and stable.
New region S3721 [N08E47] emerged with a penumbra spot.

August 7-9: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed in LASCO and STEREO imagery.
[Coronal hole history (since October
2002)]
[Compare today's report to the situation one solar rotation ago:
A small trans equatorial coronal hole (CH631) was in an Earth facing position on August 9-10.
Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle latitudes is poor to fair. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.
The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet on August 10-14. There is a chance of weak effects from CH631 on August 13.
Coronal holes (1) | Coronal mass ejection (2) | M and X class flares (3) |
1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the
next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to
green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48
hours.
Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.
Data for all numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers.
