Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was quiet to minor storm on February 18. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 377 and 445 km/s.

Solar flux at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 121.0 (increasing 0.7 over the last solar rotation). The 90 day 10.7 flux at 1 AU was 145.5. The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 16 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 15.9). Three hour interval K indices: 54332223 (planetary), 44332322 (Boulder).

The background x-ray flux is at the class B4 level.

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 12 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 185) and 11 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 142) SDO images on the visible solar disk.

Region 12282 [N13W65] was mostly quiet and stable.
Region 12284 [N13W08] decayed slowly and quietly.
New region 12286 [S19W68] emerged with a few spots.
New region 12287 [N14E23] emerged on February 17 and developed further the next day when it was numbered by SWPC. Weak polarity intermixing is observed.
New region 12288 [S07W40] reemerged on February 16 and developed slowly on February 18 when it received its NOAA number.
New region 12289 [S08E72] rotated into view on February 17 and was numbered the next day by SWPC.
New region 12290 [N19E73] rotated into view.

Spotted regions not numbered (or interpreted differently) by SWPC:
S4214 [N08W64] was quiet and stable.
S4224 [S17E07] reemerged with penumbra spots.
S4227 [N17E47] was quiet and stable.
New region S4232 [S09E53] emerged with a penumbra spot.
New region S4234 [N18E38] was observed with a penumbra spot.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

February 16-18: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed in LASCO imagery.

Coronal holes

A northern hemisphere coronal hole (CH654) rotated across the central meridian on February 15-16. A trans equatorial coronal hole (CH655) will likely rotate to an Earth facing position on February 19-21.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is fair.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to unsettled on February 19 due to a moderately high speed coronal hole stream and quiet on February 20-21. Another coronal hole related disturbance could start on February 22.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers.
