The geomagnetic field was quiet to unsettled on August 21 under the weakening influence of a high speed stream associated with CH820. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 505 and 604 km/s. Another coronal hole related disturbance began early on August 22 and is causing unsettled to minor storm conditions.
Solar flux at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 87.1 (increasing 17.3 over the previous solar rotation). The average 90 day 10.7 flux at 1 AU was 78.3. The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 8 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 8.3). Three hour interval K indices: 22331123 (planetary), 32432333 (Boulder)
The background x-ray flux is at the class B2 level.
At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 4 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 136) and in 4 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 96) SDO images on the visible solar disk.
Region 12671 [N10W17] gained a few spots as new
flux emerged near the leader spot, however,
decayed was observed elsewhere in the region. An M class flare is
still possible.
Region 12672 [N07E62] has a magnetic delta in the southern part of the
large trailing penumbra and could produce an M class flare.
Spotted regions not numbered (or interpreted differently)
by SWPC:
New region S5767 [N08E09] emerged early in the day
with an HRX spot, then decayed.
New region S5768 [N28E06] emerged with tiny spots in a reversed polarity
layout. This is another cycle 25 candidate region.

August 19-21: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed in available LASCO imagery.
[Coronal hole
history (since October 2002)]
[Compare today's report to the situation one solar rotation ago:

No obvious coronal holes are currently in or approaching Earth facing positions.
Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor to fair.
The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to minor storm on August 22 due to a high speed stream and quiet on August 23-24.
Coronal holes (1) | Coronal mass ejection (2) | M and X class flares (3) |
1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the
next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48
hours.
Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.
Data for all numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers.
