Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was quiet to unsettled on January 30. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 368 and 521 km/s. A weak disturbance, maybe the corotating interaction region associated with CH788, was observed beginning around noon at DSCOVR. Effects from CH788 are being observed early on January 31.

Solar flux at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 77.0 (increasing 3.6 over the last solar rotation). The average 90 day 10.7 flux at 1 AU was 74.8. The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 6 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 5.6). Three hour interval K indices: 11112213 (planetary), 01122212 (Boulder).

The background x-ray flux is at the class A8 level.

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 8 active regions using 2K resolution (SN: 107) and in 6 active regions using 1K resolution (SN: 75) SDO images on the visible solar disk.

Region 12629 [N15W22] decayed slowly and quietly.
New region 12630 [N15E55] rotated into view on January 29 and appeared to be slowly decaying on January 30 when it was numbered by SWPC.
New region 12631 [S04W24] emerged with several spots.

Spotted regions not numbered (or interpreted differently) by SWPC:
S5587 [S14E03] reemerged with tiny spots.
New region S5592 [N15E07] emerged with a tiny spot.
New region S5593 [S06W22] emerged with tiny spots very close to AR 12631.
New region S5594 [S11W17] emerged with small spots.
New region S5595 [S02E45] emerged with tiny spots.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

January 28-30: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed in available LASCO imagery.

Coronal holes

[Coronal hole history (since October 2002)]
[Compare today's report to the situation one solar rotation ago: 28 days ago 27 days ago 26 days ago]

A recurrent trans equatorial coronal hole (CH788), an extension of the southern polar coronal hole, rotated across the central meridian on January 28-31. A recurrent trans equatorial coronal hole (CH789) will likely become Earth facing on February 3-4.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle latitudes is poor. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor to fair.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to minor storm on January 31 to February 2 and quiet to unsettled on February 3 due to effects from CH788.

Coronal holes (1) Coronal mass ejection (2) M and X class flares (3)

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers.
