Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was quiet to unsettled on September 10. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 285 and 404 km/s. A low speed stream associated with CH584 was observed beginning after 10h UTC at SOHO.

Solar flux measured at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 94.9 (decreasing 30.3 over the last solar rotation). The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 6 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 6.3). Three hour interval K indices: 00022332 (planetary), 00032322 (Boulder).

The background x-ray flux was at the class B1 level.

At the time of counting spots (see image time) there were 9 active regions in 2K resolution (SN: 126) and 4 active regions in 1K resolution (SN: 48) SDO images with spots on the visible solar disk.

Region 11838 [S05E05] decayed slowly and quietly.
New region 11839 [S12W27] emerged with several spots.

Spotted regions not numbered by SWPC:
S2658 [S12E10] developed slowly and quietly.
S2665 [S15W05] was quiet and stable.
New region S2667 [S13E39] emerged with penumbra spots in an old plage area.
New region S2668 [S05E83] rotated into view.
New region S2669 [N13E57] emerged with penumbra spots in an old plage area.
New region S2670 [N05W33] emerged with a few penumbra spots.
New region S2671 [S28W06] emerged with a penumbra spot in an old plage area.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

September 8-10: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed in LASCO and STEREO imagery.

Coronal holes

A recurrent coronal hole (CH584) in the northern hemisphere was in an Earth facing position on September 7.  CH584 is the western part of what used to be a large coronal hole and has slowly decreased in size after rotating into view. The eastern part of that large coronal hole, now CH585, will be in an Earth facing position on September 9-11.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over high and upper middle latitudes is poor to fair. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to unsettled on September 11 due to effects from CH584. Effects from CH585 could cause quiet to minor storm conditions on September 12-14.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-20% probability, Yellow: 20-60% probability, Red: 60-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers.
