Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was inactive on April 10. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 345 and 461 km/s.

Solar flux at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 136.7 (decreasing 6.1 over the last solar rotation). The 90 day 10.7 flux at 1 AU was 151.1. The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 1 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 1.3). Three hour interval K indices: 00000000 (planetary), 01112321 (Boulder).

The background x-ray flux is at the class B8 level.

At the time of counting spots (see image time), spots were observed in 11 active regions in 2K resolution (SN: 163) and 9 active regions in 1K resolution (SN: 115) SDO images on the visible solar disk.

Region 12026 [S08W75] decayed slowly and was quiet.
Region 12027 [N13W62] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 12032 [N11E39] was quiet and stable.
Region 12033 [N12E48] was quiet and stable.
New region 12034 [N04E71] emerged near the northeast limb and has C flare potential.

Spotted regions not numbered (or interpreted differently) by SWPC:
S3302 [S18W42] was quiet and stable.
S3309 [S21W06] was quiet and stable.
S3310 [S15E18] was quiet and stable.
S3311 [S14E29] was quiet and stable.
New region S3313 [S16E87] rotated partly into view. The region produced several low level C flares and appears to have M class flare potential.
New region S3314 [S22W33] emerged with a penumbra spot.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

April 8-10: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed in LASCO and STEREO imagery.

An extension of a southern hemisphere coronal hole (CH610) rotated across the central meridian on April 8 but was likely too far to the south to become geoeffective. An extension of a northern hemisphere coronal hole (CH611) was in a potentially geoeffective position on April 10.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle latitudes is fair. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet on April 11-13. There is a chance of unsettled intervals on April 13 due to possible effects from CH611.

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-30% probability, Yellow: 30-70% probability, Red: 70-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers.
