Recent activity

The geomagnetic field was quiet to unsettled on January 26. Solar wind speed at SOHO ranged between 327 and 364 km/s.

Solar flux at 20h UTC on 2.8 GHz was 137.9 (decreasing 5.0 over the last solar rotation). The 90 day 10.7 flux at 1 AU was 146.5. The Potsdam WDC planetary A index was 6 (STAR Ap - based on the mean of three hour interval ap indices: 5.5). Three hour interval K indices: 32110111 (planetary), 22221312 (Boulder).

The background x-ray flux is at the class C1 level.

At the time of counting spots (see image time) spots were observed in 13 active regions in 2K resolution (SN: 206) and 13 active regions in 1K resolution (SN: 171) SDO images on the visible solar disk.

Region 11955 [S14W73] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 11957 [N11W75] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 11958 [S09W41] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 11959 [S23W33] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 11960 [S16W29] decayed with umbrae in the single large spot fragmenting.
C5+ flare: C6.1 at 10:13 UTC
Region 11963 [S08W09] decayed slowly and quietly.
Region 11964 [S17W13] was quiet and stable.
Region 11965 [S14E05] was quiet and stable.
Region 11966 [S13E16] decayed slowly and quietly.

Spotted regions not numbered (or interpreted differently) by SWPC:
S3029 [S22W51] was quiet and stable.
New region S3064 [N22E27] emerged early in the day and was decaying late in the day.
New region S3065 [S13W20] emerged with penumbra spots.
New region S3066 [S15E88] rotated partly into view.
This region produced 2 M1 flares early on January 27.

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs)

January 24-26: No obviously Earth directed CMEs were observed in LASCO and STEREO imagery.

A small northern hemisphere coronal hole (CH601) was in an Earth facing position on January 25.

Propagation

Long distance low and medium frequency (below 2 MHz) propagation along paths north of due west over upper middle latitudes is poor to fair. Propagation on long distance northeast-southwest paths is poor.

Forecast

The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet on January 27. On January 28-29 effects from CH601 could cause a few unsettled intervals.

Coronal holes (1) Coronal mass ejection (2) M and X class flares (3)
     

1) Effects from a coronal hole could reach Earth within the next 5 days. When the high speed stream has arrived the color changes to green.
2) Effects from a CME are likely to be observed at Earth within 96 hours.
3) There is a possibility of either M or X class flares within the next 48 hours.

Green: 0-20% probability, Yellow: 20-60% probability, Red: 60-100% probability.

When available the active region map has a coronal hole polarity overlay where red (pink) is negative and blue is positive.

Data for all numbered solar regions according to the Solar Region Summary provided by NOAA/SWPC. Comments are my own, as is the STAR spot count (spots observed at or inside a few hours before midnight) and data for regions not numbered by SWPC or where SWPC has observed no spots. SWPC active region numbers in the table below and in the active region map above are the historic SWPC/USAF numbers.
